Stand up to be more productive

So I sit all day. I sit in my car on the way into work, I sit at my desk or in a meeting most all of the day, I sit in my car on the way home, I sit on the couch when I get home.

Sure I go for walks when it’s nice, I walk to meetings, I stand up to talk to co-workers in the hall, but mostly I sit. I didn’t think much of this until I saw, and got to play with a product from ergotron called the WorkFit Sit-Stand Workstation. Basically it’s a monitor arm with keyboard attachment, which lets you stand up to use your computer.

How did I hear about this product? Well I was at the ergotron world headquarters looking at carts to put our PCs on. It was in the room, and well I loved it from the first moment.

Sure at first test, I felt a bit like a keyboard player in a band, trying to be up front, but never quite making it. I could feel that my feet, and legs were going to be sore during the break in period, but that is the beauty of this stand. I was able to slide it back down and sit for the next section, then try it all again.

It took a bit of convincing to our ergonomics guy that our company needs these. There are plenty of people who are like “Hey, I don’t want to move my whole desk to standing, but to have the option, when I want it. “ Now we wait for a few units to arrive, so we can judge effectiveness within our teams. With the type of health conscious company I work for, I think they will be a huge hit.

By being able to stand for long stretches at work, you are able to reduce stress ( ever see a dog who has been cooped up in a kennel all day?), burn about 150 calories per hour, and be more productive.

Sometimes, you just do not know when you’ll see a product that will radically change your environment. When you do, you at least have to fight to bring it in and see if your right.

Now I just need to convince the wife, I need to spend less then $400 for an Ergotron WorkFit Sit-Stand Workstation for our home machine.
